Festuca yunnanensis Saint-Yves var. genuina Saint-Yves ex Handel-Mazzetti. Subg. Festuca L. sect. Aulaxyer.
Vegetative morphology. Plants loosely tufted. Culms 6590 cm tall. Culms strict, erect. Culms internodes glabrous, or villous. Culms internodes ridged or striped. Auricles erect swellings, or absent. Auricular cilia present. Leaf blades flat, or conduplicate (usually). Leaf blades 2535 cm long. Leaf blades 35 mm wide. Leaf blades adaxial surfaces glabrous. Leaf blades abaxial surfaces glabrous, or with trichomes. Ribs 57.
Floral morphology. Inflorescences loosely open. Inflorescences 1215(19) cm long. Inflorescences branches 310 cm long. Inflorescences branches at the lowest nodes 2. Spikelets lower third of the branches without spikelets. Spikelets 910 mm long. Spikelets greenish, or purplish. Florets 45. Glumes glabrous, or with trichomes. Glumes surfaces pubescent. Glumes apices accuminate. First glume lanceolate. First glume 3.84.2 mm long. First glume 1 nerved. Second glume lanceolate. Second glume 5.35.7 mm long. Second glume 3 nerved. If varieties are recognized in this taxon, they are distingisuhed as follows: Glumes smooth, glabrous on back; lemmas upper scabrous on back, margin membranous; palea upper 1/3 part ciliolate along keels...var. yunnanensis Glumes pubescent on back; lemmas long villous on back, margin along ciliate; palea long ciliate along keels...var. villosa.
