Festuca rubra Linnaeus var. genuina Handel-Mazzetti. Type: Handel-Mazzetti, No. 4261, 20, VII, 1914 (W). Subg. Festuca L. sect. Aulaxyer.
Vegetative morphology. Plants densely tufted. Plants with shoots intravaginal. Culms 1826 cm tall. Sheaths glabrous. Sheaths open more than half their length. Auricles erect swellings, or absent. Leaf blades filiform. Leaf blades conduplicate. Leaf blades adaxial surfaces with trichomes. Leaf blades adaxial surfaces scabrous (sparely). Leaf blades margins smooth. Leaf blades 0.40.6 mm wide. Veins 5. Adaxial to abaxial sclerenchyma strands absent. Abaxial sclerenchyma poorly developed. Abaxial sclerenchyma in narrow or discrete strands. Ribs 35.
Floral morphology. Inflorescences contracted. Inflorescences 4.56 cm long. Inflorescences branches scabrous on the angles. Spikelets 810 mm long. Spikelets greenish (ovate). Lemmas 55.5 mm long. Lemmas lanceolate. Lemmas glabrous. Lemmas apices awns (1.5)2.55.5 mm long. Lemmas apices awns much shorter than the lemmas, or about as long as the lemmas. Paleas keels scaberulous, or scabrous. Anthers 2.32.8 mm long. Ovary apices glabrous.
Ecology. In subalpine grassy places, or mountain slopes; 33003700 m. Distribution. Southwestern China: Yunnan.
Notes. Alexeev (1978) placed this taxon in section Festuca and provided a rubra-like leaf cross section.
