Vegetative morphology. Plants loosely tufted. Plants clumped loosely. Plants with shoots extravaginal. Culms 60–75 cm tall. Culms 1–2 mm wide. Culms geniculate, or strict, erect. Culms nodes 3–4. Sheaths longer than the internode, or shorter than the internode. Sheaths glabrous. Auricles erect swellings, or absent. Ligules 0.3–1.5 mm long. Ligules membranous, or coriaceous. Ligules margins ciliolate. Leaf blades erect, stiffish. Leaf blades filiform. Leaf blades flat, or involute. Leaf blades 6–16 cm long. Leaf blades 1.5–3.5 mm wide. Leaf blades adaxial surfaces glabrous, or with trichomes. Leaf blades adaxial surfaces pubescent. Leaf blades abaxial surfaces glabrous. Veins 7–13. Adaxial to abaxial sclerenchyma strands present.

Floral morphology. Inflorescences loosely open. Inflorescences 11–18 cm long. Inflorescences branches 6–11 cm long. Inflorescences branches at the lowest nodes 2. 2–4 fertile spikelets on the longest branches. Inflorescences branches angular in cross section. Inflorescences branches scabrous on the angles. Pedicels 3–4 mm long. Spikelets lower half of the branches without spikelets. Spikelets 8–9 mm long. Spikelets 3 mm wide. Spikelets greenish, or purplish. Florets 3–4. Glumes glabrous, or with trichomes (second glume). Glumes surfaces scabrous. Glumes vestiture at the apex. Glumes apices accuminate. First glume 5–6 mm long. First glume 1–2 nerved. Second glume 7–8 mm long. Second glume 3–4 nerved (scabrid along the upper keel). Rachilla internodes 0.9–1.1 mm long. Rachilla internodes hispidulous. Lemmas 6.5–7.5 mm long. Lemmas broadly lanceolate. Lemmas veins 5. Lemmas with trichomes. Lemmas pubescent. Lemmas trichomes on the upper portion. Lemmas apices awns present, or absent. Lemmas apices awns (0–)0.8–2 mm long. Paleas 6 mm long. Paleas equal or subequal to the lemmas. Paleas keels scaberulous. Anthers 1.2–1.8 mm long. Ovary apices glabrous, or hairy (sparsely).

Ecology. Flowering time Jul.-Sep. On alpine meadows, grassy places of mountain slopes, under forests; 2600–4800 m. Distribution. Northwestern China: Gansu, Qinghai. Southwestern China: Sichuan.

Notes. Lu (1992) placed this taxon in Subg. Drymanthele sect. Sinenses and named it as the type species of this section.
