LE. Tzvelev (1976). Subg. Leucopoa (Griseb.) Tzvel., sect. Leucopoa.

Vegetative morphology. Plants dioecious. Plants loosely tufted. Plants with non-flowering shoots more common than flowering shoots. Plants with leaves mostly basal. Plants with shoots intravaginal. Culms 25–85 cm tall. Culms 1–1.5 mm wide. Culms internodes glabrous. Culms nodes 1–3. Butt sheaths present. Sheaths shorter than the internode. Sheaths glabrous. Sheaths conspicuous at the base of the plant, persisting for more than 1 year. Auricles erect swellings, or absent. Ligules 0.1–0.3 mm long. Leaf blades flat (usually), or involute. Leaf blades 8–25(–40) cm long. Leaf blades 2–3(–4.5) mm wide.

Floral morphology. Inflorescences loosely open. Inflorescences 6–14 cm long. Inflorescences branches 3–7 cm long (slender, smooth). Inflorescences branches at the lowest nodes 1 (usually). Spikelets lower half of the branches without spikelets. Spikelets 7–11 mm long. Spikelets purplish. Florets 2–6. Glumes margins narrowly membranous. Glumes apices acute, or accuminate. First glume 3–4.5 mm long. First glume 1 nerved. Second glume 4–6 mm long. Second glume 3 nerved. Lemmas 6–8 mm long. Lemmas broadly lanceolate. Lemmas herbaceous. Lemmas veins 5. Lemmas upper margins narrowly membranous, or broadly membranous. Lemmas apices awns present, or absent. Lemmas apices awns 0–2 mm long. Paleas equal or subequal to the lemmas. Anthers 2.7–4 mm long (male floret; ca. 1 mm in female). Ovary apices hairy. Ovary hairs dense. Cytology. 2n = 28.

Ecology. In grassy places of mountain slopes; 3500–4000 m. Distribution. Southwestern China: Yunnan, Xizang.

Notes. Tzvelev (1976) recognized this species as having intravaginal shoots covered with glossy straw coloured leaf sheaths that do not spilt into fibers, and distinct from F. sibirica that he described as having both extra- and intravaginal shoots covered with less glossy, usually light gray or brownish leaf sheaths that split into individual fibers. No reason to synonimise these taxa has been found, although this has been done by some authors.
