Vegetative morphology. Plants densely tufted. Plants with non-flowering shoots more common than flowering shoots. Plants with leaves mostly basal. Plants with tillering leaves 1/4 to 1/3 the length of the culms. Rhizomes absent. Culms 15–30 cm tall. Sheaths glabrous. Auricles erect swellings, or absent. Ligules 0.9–1.1 mm long. Ligules margins ciliate. Leaf blades filiform. Leaf blades conduplicate. Leaf blades 7–15 cm long (cauline leaves). Leaf blades adaxial surfaces glabrous. Leaf blades abaxial surfaces glabrous. Flag leaves blades 1.5–3 cm long (cauline leaves). Flag leaves blades distinctly shorter than the sheath. Leaf blades 0.4–0.6 mm wide. Veins 5. Adaxial to abaxial sclerenchyma strands absent. Abaxial sclerenchyma well developed. Abaxial sclerenchyma in broad bands or continuous. Ribs 1–3.
Floral morphology. Inflorescences lanceolate. Inflorescences spiciform, or contracted. Inflorescences 3.5–4.5 cm long. Inflorescences branches 0.5–1 cm long. Inflorescences branches at the lowest nodes 1 (usually), or 2. Spikelets aggregated towards the ends of the branches. Spikelets 5–6 mm long. Spikelets greenish. Florets 4. Glumes with trichomes. Glumes surfaces pubescent. Glumes vestiture over most of the outer surface. Glumes margins ciliate. First glume narrowly lanceolate. First glume 2.8–3.2 mm long. First glume 1 nerved. Second glume broadly lanceolate. Second glume 3.8–4.3 mm long. Second glume 3 nerved. Lemmas 4–5 mm long. Lemmas broadly lanceolate. Lemmas veins 5. Lemmas nerveless in dorsal view or sometimes with only the centre vein distinct. Lemmas with trichomes. Lemmas pubescent. Lemmas trichomes over the entire surface. Lemmas apices acute, or accuminate. Lemmas apices awns absent (or mucronate). Paleas equal or subequal to the lemmas. Anthers 1.4–1.6 mm long. Ovary apices glabrous.
Ecology. Flowering time Sep.-Nov. On grasslandss, steppes. Distribution. Northeastern China: Heilongjiang.
