Vegetative morphology. Rhizomes present (short). Culms 50–60 cm tall. Butt sheaths present. Sheaths glabrous, or with trichomes. Sheaths conspicuous at the base of the plant, persisting for more than 1 year. Auricles erect swellings, or absent. Ligules 0.1–0.3 mm long. Ligules apices erose, or lacerate. Leaf blades flat, or involute. Leaf blades (2–)4–20 cm long. Leaf blades adaxial surfaces with trichomes. Leaf blades adaxial surfaces scabrous. Leaf blades abaxial surfaces with trichomes. Flag leaves blades 2–6 cm long.

Floral morphology. Inflorescences loosely open. Inflorescences branches 3–6 cm long. Inflorescences branches at the lowest nodes 2. Inflorescences branches scabrous on the angles. Spikelets aggregated towards the ends of the branches, or lower third of the branches without spikelets, or lower half of the branches without spikelets. Spikelets 10–12 mm long. Florets 4–5. Glumes glabrous. Glumes apices accuminate. First glume narrowly lanceolate. First glume 4–4.5 mm long. First glume 1 nerved. Second glume broadly lanceolate. Second glume 5–5.5 mm long. Second glume 3 nerved (lateral veins usually obsolete). Lemmas (5–)6–6.5 mm long. Lemmas glabrous, or with trichomes. Lemmas scabrous. Lemmas trichomes on the upper portion. Lemmas apices awns 1–1.5 mm long. Paleas equal or subequal to the lemmas. Paleas keels scabrous. Anthers 3.8–4.2 mm long. Ovary apices hairy (sparsely).

Ecology. Flowering time Aug.-Sep. Near forests, wet places; 2600–4000 m. Distribution. Northwestern China: Xinjiang.

Notes. Classification following Tzvelev (1976). He described the taxon as occurring on sswales and stony slopes, in the upper mountain belt of Central Asia, Jungaria-Tarbagatai,Tien Shan (northern and central).
